A few weeks ago, I incorporated music from various animes and games to help maintain the atmosphere I envision for my game. It served as a reminder of the specific ambiance I want to create.
This week, I finally embarked on crafting the game’s theme music. I drew inspiration from “Eiyuu Ganbou,” composed by Keiji Inai. I’m drawn to the heroic undertones of the melody, which also carries a somewhat melancholic quality—an ideal fit for the game’s mood, in my opinion.
Though I have some knowledge of musical notes from my earlier piano-playing days, I encountered difficulties when attempting to grasp song structure, including elements like the intro, verse, chorus, bridge, and outro. Additionally, I was new to using digital audio workstation (DAW) software for composing music on my computer. Fortunately, I discovered several free DAW options, making this part of the process more accessible.
With a basic concept and mood in mind, equipped with DAW software and a growing familiarity with musical structures, I took the plunge, and… well, I faced several failures. Without a clear melody (since I couldn’t just copy the original) and a solid grasp of chords, harmonies, and other musical elements, repeated failures were inevitable.
However, after a considerable amount of time and determination, I started recalling important musical principles. I ultimately composed a piece featuring the 1st violin carrying the melody, supported by the 2nd violin, the piano contributing chords, and a bass guitar providing rhythmic accompaniment.
I’m quite proud of my initial composition. The only drawback is that it doesn’t resemble the song I originally intended to emulate. Nevertheless, this experience has taught me valuable lessons, and I’m ready to move forward and create the next version of the theme song.
See you in the next update!
